When parents ask for help, my first response is often a simple question: Why?
If a parent says, “My child won’t go to sleep at 8:00 PM, and I keep losing it,” we don’t start by fixing the child. We start by understanding the parent’s experience by asking and answering some core questions, such as:
● What is being triggered?
● Why does this feel so intense?
● What story from the past is getting activated?
● And what would it look like to respond in a way that matches the kind of home you want to create?
It can be hard to accept that our reactions set the tone for our child’s behavior. -But it’s also empowering, because the only person we can truly control is ourselves.
